It offers a simplified method for finding the design forces for structural members for earthquake. It is also useful for approximate evaluation of seismic reliability of structures. For seismic design, these maximum stresses are of interest, not the time history of stress.
Equivalent lateral force for an earthquake is defined as a set of lateral force which will produce the same peak response as that obtained by dynamic analysis of structures. The equivalence is restricted to a single mode of vibration. Using the acceleration response spectrum, an equivalent static load is derived which will provide the same maximum response as that obtained in each mode of vibration.
Maximum modal responses are combined to find total maximum response of the structure. The first two steps do not have approximations, while the third step has some approximations. As a result, response spectrum analysis is called an approximate analysis; but applications show that it provides mostly a good estimate of peak responses.
Method is developed for single point, single component excitation for classically damped linear systems. As the contributions of responses from different modes constitute the total response, the total maximum response is obtained by combining modal quantities. It ignores the algebraic sign of the response.
Actual time history analysis shows modal peaks occur at different times as shown in Fig. Thus, the combination provides a conservative estimate of response.
When frequencies are not well separated, some errors are introduced due to the degree of correlation of modal responses which is ignored.

Because of the underlying principle of random vibration in deriving the combination rules, the peak response would be better termed as mean peak response.

As a field of study within structural engineeringseismic analysis is often used to study potential damage to buildings and other structures due to earthquakes.
In geologyseismic analysis is used to study the interior of the Earth by analyzing the way seismic waves travel through the materials that make up the planet. Structural engineers employ seismic analysis in a number of ways.
Existing buildings and other structures as well as the surrounding and underlying soils and rocks may be studied with sophisticated simulation software to try to predict how they will act during an earthquake. This study is useful for emergency management, as well as for determining the relative safety and durability of buildings and other structures during and after earthquakes.
These simulations allow structural engineers to recommend possible improvements and retrofits to existing structures to improve their ability to withstand earthquakes and to suggest changes or updates to building codes for areas prone to earthquakes. Architects often work with structural engineers during the design phase of a new building or structure to determine how it will behave if struck by an earthquake.
Many factors, including building design, materials, and the make up of underlying soils and rocks influence how a building will behave during and after an earthquake. Seismic analysis can help determine if a proposed design is strong and safe enough to adequately withstand earthquakes.
Geologists employ seismic analysis to study the interior of the earth. By studying the way seismic waves, either from earthquakes or from man made events like detonations of explosives, travel through the ground, they are able to learn much about the rocks and soils through which the seismic waves travel.
Seismographs, extremely sensitive instruments that are designed to detect seismic waves, along with other instruments and computers, allow geologists to study layers of the Earth far beneath the surface that they would not otherwise be able to access.
In the mining industryseismic analysis is used by geologists and mining engineers to determine potential places to look for mineral and petrochemical resources.Garmin nuvi reset button
Seismic analysis may also be used to predict potential safety problems in mines. Concerns about safety can arise because of the structure of the rocks and soils in which the mining is done as well as because of the way those rocks and soils might act during an earthquake.

What Is Seismic Inversion? What Is Seismic Data Processing? It is a big subject and mainly deals with earthquake as a geological process. However, some portions of seismology are of great interest to earthquake engineers. They include causes of earthquake, earthquake waves, measurement of earthquake, effect of soil condition on earthquake, earthquake pre- diction and earthquake hazard analysis.
Understanding of these topics help earthquake engineers in dealing seismic effects on structures in a better way.
Further knowledge of seismology is helpful in describing earthquake inputs for structures where enough recorded data is not available. Before earthquake is looked as a geological process, some knowledge about the structure of earth is in order. In-side the earth. Mantle: lithosphere km ; asthenosphere-plastic molten rock km ; bottom- homogenous; variation of v is less km - km. Lithosphere floats as a cluster of plates with different movements in different directions.
Fig 1. At mid oceanic ridges, two continents which were joined together drifted apart due to flow of hot mantle upward. Flow takes place because of convective circulation of earth's mantle; energy comes from radioactivity inside the earth.
Hot material cools as it comes up; additional crust is formed which moves outward. Concept of plate tectonics evolved from continental drift. New crust sinks beneath sea surface; spreading continues until lithosphere reaches deep sea trenches where subduction takes place. As a result, motions take place through sliding of lithosphere in pieces- called tectonic plates. They move in different directions at different speeds.
Three types of Inter plate interactions exist giving three types of boundaries. Tectonic plates pass each other at the transform faults. Faults at the plate boundaries are the likely locations for earthquakes - inter plate earth- quake. Earthquakes occurring within the plate are caused due to mutual slip of rock bed releasing energy- intra plate earthquake. Slip creates new faults, but faults are mainly the causes rather than results of earthquake.
At the faults two different types of slipage are observed- Dip slip; Strike slip. In reality combination of the types of slipage is observed at the fault line. This accumulation of stresses finally results in inter plate or intra plate earthquakes. In inter- plate earthquake the existing fault lines are affected while intra-plate earthquake new faults are created. During earthquake, slip takes place at the fault; length over which slip takes place could be several kilometres; earthquake origin is a point that moves along the fault line.
Elastic rebound theory, put forward by Reid, gives credence to earthquake caused by slip along faults. Large amplitude shearing displacement that took place over a large length along the San andreas fault led to elastic rebound theory.
Owing to various slow tectonic activities, strains accumulate at the fault over a long time. Strained layers of rock masses bounces back to its unstrained condition. This situation is equivalent to two pairs of coupled forces suddenly acting and thus, moving masses of rock leading to radial waves propagating in all directions. Seismology T. The majority of the waves travels through the rocks within the crust and then passes through the soil to the top surface. Other theory of tectonic earthquake stipulates that the earthquake occurs due to phase changes of rock mass, accompanied by volume changes in small volume of crust.
Those who favour this theory argues that earthquakes do occur at greater depths where faults do not exist. In addition, the process to generate floor response spectra to determine the accelerations and required attachment forces for nonstructural components and systems will be presented.
